The AKM is a rifle designed by Soviet small arms designer Mikhail Kalashnikov in 1959. It is the most unique rifle. It was developed as a replacement for the AK-47 introduced ten years ago.
Ak 47 Assault Rifle With Folding Stock, Russia 1947
The AKM entered service with the Soviet Army in 1959 and is the most popular variant of the AK family of pneumatic-mounted firearms. It has found widespread use in most former Warsaw Pact members and their African and Asian allies, as well as many other export and domestic productions. The production of these rifles took place at the Tula Arms and Izhmash plant. It was officially replaced in Soviet frontline service by the AK-74 in the late 1970s, but is still in use around the world.
AKM kept the wooden stock of the AK-47, but with simpler individual parts which facilitated mass production. As with AK-47, there are many AKM variants such as AKMS, AKML and AKMP.
The AKM is an assault rifle chambered for the Soviet 7.62×39mm intermediate cartridge. It is selective-fire, rotary bolt-operated gas, semi- or fully automatic fire with a cyclic rate of fire of approximately 600 rounds per minute (RPM). The gas action has a large bolt carrier and a permanently attached long stroke gas piston. The gas chamber is located above the barrel. The bolt brackets ride on two rails that form the sides of the receiver with plenty of space between the moving and stationary parts.
Although superseded by the AK-74 in the late 1970s, the AKM is still in service with some Russian Army reserve and second-line units, as well as several Eastern European countries. GRAU officially named the 6P1 assault rifle AKM.
Ak 47 Vehicle Magnets (x2)
Compared to the AK-47, the AKM has improvements in detail and a grip that optimizes the rifle for mass production; some parts and assemblies were conceived using simplified manufacturing methods. Most notably, the milled steel receiver of the AK-47 was replaced by a U-shaped steel stamping. As a result of these changes, the weight of the AKM was reduced by ≈ 1 kg (2.2 lb) , auto-fire accuracy has been improved, and several reliability issues have been resolved. The chrome-plated barrel of the AK-47 was retained, a common feature of Soviet weapons to resist wear and corrosion, especially under harsh field conditions and in the Eastern Bloc, where corrosive primer ammunition was almost universally used.
The AKM's receiver is stamped from 0.04 in (1.0 mm) plain steel, while the AK-47's receiver is machined from thicker steel. The rear stock pin and front barrel pin are riveted to the U-shaped receiver. The receiver housing also has cross-sectional rigid tubular mounts for added structural strength. The rails are spot welded inside the receiver to facilitate movement of the bolt linkage, which also contains the ejector. As a weight-saving measure, the stamped receiver cover is made of thinner metal than the AK-47. For strength and durability, it incorporates longitudinal and transverse ribs.
The barrel of the AKM has a chrome-lined chamber with four right side grooves, 240 mm (1 in 9.45 in) barrel curvature, or 31.5 caliber rifling. The front barrel pin has a non-threaded socket for the barrel and a cross hole for the pin that holds the barrel in place. The barrel of the AKM is mounted and secured in the front trunnion (as opposed to the AK-47, which has a one-piece receiver with one-piece trunnion and bolt-on barrel). Additionally, the barrel has horizontal guides to help align and secure the handguard. To improve the weapon's accuracy when firing on automatic, the AKM features an oblique compensator that helps redirect the expanding propellant gases up and to the right when firing, thus relieving the muzzle when holding the gun. automatic fire in the right hand of the Rising Shooter. The compressor is screwed onto the d of the barrel with a left-hand thread. Not all AKMs have tilt compensators; some even have old AK-47 muzzle nuts fitted. Most AKMs with muzzle nuts are older production models. AKM's tilt compensator can also be used on the AK-47, it has a simple nut to cover the threads.
The air block in the AKM does not have a cleaning rod retainer or sling loop, but instead features an integrated bayonet mount ring with a guide hole for the cleaning rod. The front harness loops have been relocated to the front handguard attachment caps. The handguard retainer also features notches for positioning the handguard on the barrel. The AKM's laminated wood handguard has cross grooves to help hold the rifle securely.

The gas release ports (in the AK-47 located horizontally on the cylinder) to relieve the gas pressure in the piston cylinder are moved forward to the gas block and arranged radially.
The bolt yoke of the AKM has an illuminated cutout milled into the right side of the front half of the handle. The profile of the handle has also been narrowed. The shank of the AKM bolt is slotted another way to help save weight. The round grooved firing pin on the AK-47 was also replaced by a flat firing pin on the AKM. All works are usually painted black rather than unfinished ("white").
The stock, lower handguard, and upper heatplate are made of birch plywood laminates, like the later mobile AK-47.
This imitation lumber is stronger and less prone to warping than traditional one-piece lumber, doesn't require extensive seasoning, and is less expensive. The wooden stock used in the AKM was further hollowed out to reduce weight and was longer and straighter than that of the AK-47, which helped ensure accuracy on successive shots when firing fast automatics. The wooden stock also comes with the supplied cleaning kit, which is a small diameter metal tube with a screw cap. The kit usually consists of cleaning clips, with a piece of tissue wrapped around the clips and dipped in the cleaning solution. It also contains a punch, a mounting pin used to hold the trigger, insulator, and reducer together as you place them back into the receiver after cleaning your firearm, and a barrel brush. The kit is secured in the stock by a spring trap in the pressed sheet metal stock cover. The stock fits into the stepped rear pin with a single top tang and two screws. The rear stud itself is secured to the stamped receiver with four rivets (two on each side). Folding models have a U-shaped rear pin which reinforces the locking arm and is secured to the receiver with six rivets (see variants for more information).
